How To Clean Sony A6500 Sensor

Fingerprint smudge on sensor, can I clean?

Fingerprint smudge on sensor, can I clean?

Jun 2, 2020

My daughter was helping me change a lens while I was holding a spider, and she accidentally touched the sensor (My fault, forgot to warn her).   Can I clean a smudge like this?  Everything I google says I should take it to a pro cleaner.  Thanks for any advice!

Re: Fingerprint smudge on sensor, can I clean?

I'd give it a shot, it's mostly oil, probably no more grit than the usual dust.  I clean my sensor often (usually not a finger print). I would use the liquid on the swan. Worst that could happen is you'd have to get it cleaned by a "pro."

Definitely. Just use appropriate swabs wet and dry. I have used vsgo swabs with excellent results.

You can clean it because the outer surface of the sensor is a filter not a silicon chip.  This is an infra red blocking filter.  It is cleanable the same way a lens is except that you have to be careful to use only damp cleaner such a s microfiber cloth rather than a spray.

Yes I've cleaned my sensors many times (using VSGO kits).  In fact, when I took my camera to the local shop and inquired about a fringerprint-on-sensor cleaning, they just sold me a cleaning kit!\

These sensors are much sturdier than people would lead you to believe.  I slammed a rocket cleaner tip into my sensor once when I slipped. The impact was hard enough to leave a streak of plastic residue, and yet the sensor was good as new after a quick cleaning.

Like the other poster, I have used VSGO cleaning kits with success.  It was at first very nerve racking, but in the end it was a very simple job.

Thank you, all!   I ordered a kit with swabs and solution.   Will let you know how it goes.  Ironically, this is the first time I've had to clean the sensor in the 2-3 years I've had the camera.... up to now, my rocket blower has been all I needed.

Re: Fingerprint smudge on sensor, can I clean?

The worst part of this is that I'm off work tomorrow, had planned to head to the woods, but can't really take pictures now.  This may prove helpful in convincing my wife I need a backup camera.  Wondering if an a7riv would be a good backup to my a6300?  ðŸ˜„

You're lucky!  I have to clean off sensor gunk all the time that my blower can't handle.

When you do the cleaning, take your time, use only a little pressure on the swab, and don't be afraid to use a number of swabs since you do have some oil to loosen and remove. Remember, one swipe in each direction.

As to the A7R4-, of course it would be an ideal backup for the 6300, and since your daughter is helping you with lens changes, the 6300 may become hers!

(Great shot of the fingerprint, btw.)

Hey, all, thanks for the advice.  I got my sensor cleaning kit in the mail, and it turned out to be no big deal.  Followed the directions to spray a puff or two of the cleaner on the swab, then use each side of swab to gently go across sensor.  Ended up using four swabs to get it perfectly clean, and now the photos are sharp again, sensor looks pristine.

Thanks again for the advice.   My photos have gone from awful back to my normal mediocre.  ðŸ˜„
