How to Clean Your Window Grilles

Window grilles deter hardy thieves from attempting to intrude on your property and they attract lower insurance premiums from some insurance providers. Items you will need:

Window cleaner
Bucket
Mild detergent or equal measures of water and vinegar
Scrubbing brush (old toothbrush for hard to reach areas)
Graphite powder (a pencil will do), or other lubricant

Additional tip: if you live in a coastal area it is recommended that you wash your windows and grilles more frequently, every 2-4 weeks, to remove the salt that is transferred from the moist air onto the metal parts of your grille. This is the best defence against premature corrosion.

Cleaning your grilles

Begin by unlocking your security grilles and retracting them to the side. This allows you to wash the windows or doors that are behind . Start with this so that dirt from the windows isn't transferred to the grilles while cleaning.

Then get to work with the scrubbing brush and detergent , removing all large areas of muck and then rinse with clean water. Repeat this process until you are happy with the result, much like you might a car. Use detergent or vinegar if you are looking for a natural cleaner. Feel free to add baking soda to equal parts of water and vinegar for a natural cleaner with extra bite.

Leave the grilles to dry in the wind , sun or other naturally drying phenomena. Then, lubricate the moving parts . This includes all hinges and essentially anywhere where friction between metal parts is found. Do not over lubricate as this will attract dust and dirt rather than protect from it. Get your favourite dirty rag and give the moving parts a once over to remove any excess lube.

Work the lubricant into the moving parts by opening and closing the grilles a reasonable number of times, before leaving the grilles open for business or closing them once more to enjoy unrivalled security.
